Essential Oils For Lupus (Part – I)

Essential oils or Aromatherapy is around us for hundreds of years. Generally, we use them for improving our mood, pain relief, sleep, stress. This is popularly known as aromatherapy. Today, you will know how you can use some essential oils for lupus symptoms.

In lupus, our body generates some antibodies that attack our own healthy body cells. It not only affects the cells but also our major functioning body parts and organs like brain, kidney, heart, eyes, joints and muscles.

The symptoms of Lupus are quite similar to that of other autoimmune disorders like fibromyalgia, Reynaud’s, scleroderma and so on. It hits females 90% more than the males. The most common complaints of lupus warriors include; excruciating joint pain, anxiety, sleeplessness, skin rashes, extreme fatigue, headache and depression.

Generally, the doctors prescribe one of the several lupus treatments depending on the nature and severity of lupus. Even though it is incurable, but it can be well managed in long-run.

A study shows that some CAM (Complimentary and Alternative Medicine) for SLE are quite useful. However, there are very few clinical trials to shore up, yet they do improve our quality of life depending on the alternative treatments taken.

Some of us take these CAM along with conventional medicine, some replace them. From my standpoint, I suggest to not to quit your primary treatment for any alternative treatment all at once. Take it slow, let CAM accelerate your healing process, but consult your doctor before jumping into one. For example; there are several herbs and supplements that can affect you negatively.


Some believe it got its roots in ancient China where it was used a mood enhancer. However, it got more prominence when the Egyptians came up with the first distillation mechanism to extract the oils from certain plants like clove and cinnamon. Well, they were mostly used to mummify the dead ones. The Greeks played an important part in the history of aromatherapy. A Greek perfumer, Megallus formulated a fragrance with myrrh, which he named “megaleion”.
Even Hippocrates, who is known as the ‘father of medicine’ used aromatherapy for healing benefits. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist came up with the name “aromatherapy” after a burn incident drove him curious regarding the healing properties of the essential oils. In fact, it was the lavender oil that helped him heal his burn. In World War II, French surgeon Jane Valnet used essential oils to help the wounded soldiers heal.


  1. Massage Oil: You can mix a few drops of essential oil with one of two other carrier oils (vegetable or herbal oils) and use the combined oil to massage your body.
  2. Facial Use: Add a few drops of essential oils to your face cream, lotion or mask. If you want, you can also prepare a mix of herbal oils and add a few drops of your essential oil to it.
  3. Steam Inhalation: Add a few drops of essential oils like eucalyptus, thyme or lemon into a bowl of boiling water. Cover your head with a towel and lean over the bowl. Close your eyes and inhale the steam through your nose.
  4. Bath: You can add a few drops of essential oil to your bath water.
  5. Direct Inhalation: You can inhale directly from the bottle or pour a few drops on a cotton ball or handkerchief.
  6. Palm Inhalation: Rub a few drops of essential oil over your palm and then sniff it.
  7. You can also use diffusers, aromatic salts, aromatic spritzers.

NOTE: Depending on your skin, age and which oil you are using, the dilution rate varies.


Accept it, essential oils are not that cheap. It takes a lot of the plant material to produce a tiny bottle of essential oil. Heat can ignite them so always store them in Cobalt or Amber glass or stainless steel bottles preferably in dark-colored ones in room temperature. Light can affect the color of the oils so keep them anywhere in your room but not in the windowsill. You can store them in the refrigerator but not in the freezer. Take it out at least 12 hours before using it so it can return to the room temperature.

Make sure they are kept in airtight container. If exposed to oxygen or moisture for long, it will evaporate faster. Moisture will make it cloudy or bead up at the bottom of the container so don’t open the lids for long. Also, transfer the essential oils from a larger container if it is half empty into some smaller container.


Different oils got different benefits. From sleep issues, anxiety, inflammation, skin irritation, digestive problems, headaches – essentials oils are proven to be effective for most of our lupus snags. Before we start, remember that the FDA doesn’t regulate these essential oils and many of the doctors don’t even validate essential oils for lupus treatment. So if you are allergic to something, consult your doctor before using any essential oils.


This essential oil can help us with several lupus symptoms. It is good for pain, stress, sleep, skin problems and headaches. Further, it got great antioxidant properties that give us a sense of well-being. It is convenient to calm yourself in a crowded place like in bus or plane. You can use it treat any minor burns or just even to enhance the flavors of your recipes.

Essential Oils for Lupus


  1. Try mixing three drops of this oil into your carrier oil and massage on your skin.
  2. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to the water your will be bathing with.
  3. Rub two-three drops of lavender oil on your palm then smooth your pillow with it. It boosts your sleep.
  4. Pat a few drop of undiluted lavender oil in your palms and inhale the aroma. It calms downs the amygdala gland and thus the mind. You can rub them on your other body parts as well like temple, naval, back of your ears, wrists or feet.


Ginger not only enhances the flavors of your meal but it got some important health benefits as well. If you are having a cough and cold, you cut ginger into small slices and add a little salt to it. Take a slice a salty ginger slice and chew a little but don’t swallow it. Keep it in your mouth – it helps you in through irritation. Coming to the benefits of ginger oil, it is good for your heart, stomach and joints, relieves pain, brings mental clarity, reduce inflammation and so on.

Essential Oils for Lupus


  1. Add a few drops of ginger oil in meals that require ginger.
  2. Add two-three drops of ginger oils in your palm or in your diffuser and inhale.
  3. Rub a few drops of ginger oil over your joint and muscle where you are experiencing pain.
  4. Similarly, you can rub it over your heart, lower abdomen for a couple of times daily – it would help you improve blood circulation and relieve nausea.
  5. Add a few drop of ginger oil to warm bath water. it helps you get rid of toxins.
  6. Add a few drop of it to a glass of water or a cup of tea. It helps you improve your respiratory system and even prevent vomiting.


Chamomile oil got two varieties; Roman and German. Chamomile can be used in tea, however, the essential oil got more antioxidants and is more stable. Chamomile oil is known for its calming properties. It helps you get sleep further reduces anxiety and depression, which are the most common complaint of most of the lupus patients. Chamomile works great as an alternative for lavender. It is also great for digestion and skin irritation and inflammation.

Chamomile Essential Oil


  1. Add a few drops of chamomile essential oil to your carrier oil and rub on your skin. It is useful for acne problem as it got anti-bacterial properties.
  2. You can diffuse it in a diffuser with a few drops of lavender and peppermint essential oil or just direct apply some chamomile oil on your temple. It will ease your nausea.
  3. Mix it with some extra virgin olive oil or organic coconut oil and apply on your abdomen. If you want you can use it undiluted also. It improves digestion and resolves your gut issues.
  4. The aroma of the chamomile essential oil when inhaled through palm inhalation method or through a diffuser helps you calm down and uplifts your mood.

These are my three favorite essential oils that have been really versatile to relief me from my major symptoms. I know there are some more essential oils like lemon, frankincense, eucalyptus, myrrh, tea tree, cedarwood, thyme and peppermint oil. I will be covering them in my future blogs.

      • Hello Sumana, Generally essential oils don’t have any contraindications. Lavender or ginger oil don’t have any contraindications. However, ginger oil may cause your little skin irritation. But, it is advisable to not to use chamomile oil in first trimester of pregnancy and always dilute it before using as it is very strong. If you are expecting a baby do consult your doctor before using any essential oil.
        P.S. Always do run a small patch test to see it causes you any irritation.
